About Jorhat: The town of Jorhat is located 314 km from Guwahati. Renowned for its cultural heritage, Jorhat is also called the gateway to upper Assam, and is an important link between lower and upper Assam, as well as North Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Most people visit Jorhat en-route to Majuli, the world's largest river island. Majuli is 12 kilometres from Jorhat, in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. The main attraction of Majuli is its Satras, Hindu Vaishnavaite monasteries that also function as centres for Assamese arts.

The institution of the Satra was founded in the 15th Century by the Assamese poet, composer and philosopher Sankaradeva. At the Satras, Vishnu is worshipped through dance dramas re-enacting the stories of the Mahabharatha, with music and poetry. The Satras of Majuli, no more than 5 kilometres away from one another, are rich with a tradition that marks Assamese Hinduism from all other traditions.

This strategically located district of Assam is a nature lover’s paradise and has a lot to offer a visitor. The Kaziranga National Park is also close by and draws large crowds every year.

Jorhat is connected by road, rail and air to other parts of Assam and major cities of the country.

About Kaziranga National Park:  Kaziranga National Park is situated in one of the "Biodiversity Hot-spots" of the world and is home to India's Big Four - the Great Indian One Horned Rhinoceros, the Royal Bengal Tiger , the Asian Elephant, and the Asiatic Buffalo. It is also home to the largest number of Swamp Deer in eastern India. If Kaziranga National Park were not so closely identified with the rhino, it would probably have become famous as one of the finest birding destinations in the world. In addition to numerous species of resident birds, it serves as the winter visiting ground to many migratory birds. Kaziranga is located at the intersection of both the Australasian and the Indo-Asian flyways, with the result that its bird count hovers around the 500 species mark. Several of the species are found only in northeast India, while others are exclusive to the grassland habitat found inside the park. Birdlife International has identified Kaziranga National Park as an Important Bird Area (IBA) for the conservation of the avifaunal species. The birds found here include 25 globally threatened and 21 near threatened species of avifauna, an integral part of Indian Wildlife.

Kaziranga National Park lies in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River, and is flat country with elephant grass and shallow swamps interspersed with large patches of semi-evergreen forest. It is enclosed by Karbi Anglong in the south, and the Brahmaputra in the north. The Mora Diphlu, Bhengra and the Diphlu rivers also drain the park, together with countless smaller streams that feed the many bheels (lakes) that dot the park. The numerous water bodies are rich reservoirs of food (including fish), which attract thousands of migratory birds from as far a field as Siberia.

Tocklai Tea Research Centre
The Tea Research Association (TRA) is a registered co-operative society dedicated to scientific research and extension for improvement in productivity and quality of tea in the North East (NE) India. Research on all aspects of tea cultivation and processing is carried out at Tocklai Experimental Station, Jorhat the oldest and the largest research station of its kind in the world. Transfer of technology to its member estates is carried out through its advisory network covering South Bank, North Bank, Upper Assam, Cachar, Do oars, Darjeeling and Terai. Tocklai has its substation at Nagrakata. All outstations/branches have well equipped soil testing laboratories. Membership is voluntary .

Since its inception in 1911, Tocklai has been serving the industry and has become synonymous with the research on tea in the country .It has unfurled technological knowledge in tea from time to time. The phenomenal increase in production of tea in N.E. India, from 234 million kg in 1951 to about 669 million kg in 1998, clearly underlines the impact of R&D activities on production. The average productivity of TRA member estates covering 75% of the total tea growing area of the N.E. India is about 56% more than that of Non-members in the region which is a glaring outcome of effective implementation of Tocklai's R&D result.
